Have you ever attended an early morning Mass while traveling?

금요일 저녁, 빈(Vienna)에 도착하자마자 짐을 풀고 가벼운 산책을 나섰다. 한국에서 오스트리아까지는 약 12시간의 비행 거리. 장시간 비행으로 피로한 몸을 풀어주기엔 산책만큼 좋은 선택도 없을 것이다. 우리는 한국과는 사뭇 다른 유럽의 보도블록 위를 걸으며, 색다른 건축물들에 저절로 눈길이 닿았다. 그 거리에는 비엔나 중심가의 구시가지라는 것을 알려 주듯이, 젊은 현지인들과 여행자들이 저마다 얼굴 가득 웃음을 띤 채, 들뜬 목소리로 이야기를 나누고 있었다. 그 분위기에 나도 모르게 발걸음이 가벼워졌고, 거리 전체를 천천히 둘러보며 유럽의 정취에 흠뻑 젖어 들었다.

‘아, 유럽이구나.’

We arrived in Vienna on a Friday evening. After checking into our hotel, we went out for a light walk to shake off the fatigue of the long flight from Korea — about 12 hours in the air. There’s nothing quite like a walk to stretch your legs and awaken your senses after such a journey. While we strolled along the somewhat different European cobblestone streets, the unique architecture surrounding us kept catching our eyes. When I turned my head, the atmosphere made it clear we were in Vienna’s old town — young locals and fellow travelers alike were chatting with lively voices and joyful expressions. Caught up in that energy, my own steps grew a little lighter. We took our time soaking in the city’s charm, allowing the European ambiance fully wash over us.

“Ah, this is Europe.”

그렇게 첫날 밤, 우리는 숙소로 돌아와 따뜻한 샤워를 하고는 깊은 잠에 들었다. 오스트리아를 온전히 느끼고 싶었던 우리의 여행 목적에 부합하는, 참 좋은 시작이었다. 단잠을 잔 덕분인지, 예상보다 일찍 일어났기에 간단히 아침을 챙겨 먹고 다시 산책을 나서기로 했다. 조용한 골목을 걷던 중, 어딘가에서 들려오는 새벽 성당의 종소리가 귀를 사로 잡았다. 마치 우리를 부르는 듯한 울림처럼.

That night, back at the hotel, we took a warm shower and fell into a deep sleep. It was the perfect beginning to a journey that we hoped would allow us fully experience Austria. I guess we slept really well, because we woke up earlier than expected. So we decided to have a quick breakfast and go for a walk through the still-sleeping city. As we wandered through the quiet streets, the distant sound of bells suddenly caught our ears. It felt like a gentle calling.

거리는 전날 저녁의 북적임이 무색할 정도로 고요했고, 사람들로 가득했던 공간이 언제 그랬냐는 듯 텅 비어 있었다. 그 평화로운 분위기 속에서 우리는 슈테판 대성당(Stephansdom)으로 향하게 되었다. 관광객도, 현지인도 거의 없는 새벽 시간. 일부러 시간을 맞춘 것도 아닌데, 막 시작하려는 미사에 우연히 참여할 수 있었다. 처음엔 멀찍이 바라보다가, 어느새 조심스럽게 안으로 들어가 한 걸음 한 걸음 미사에 다가서고 있는 우리를 발견했다. 독일어로 진행되는 미사였지만, 언어는 전혀 문제가 되지 않았다. 의식은 차분하고 경건했으며, 어쩐지 따뜻했다. 모든 내용을 이해하지는 못했지만, 그저 그 자리에 함께 있다는 것만으로도 충분했다.

The energetic crowds from the previous evening had vanished, leaving behind a serene silence. Guided by that peacefulness and the sound of bells, we found ourselves walking toward St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) without knowing it. We hadn’t planned to, but we happened to arrive just as an early morning Mass was about to begin. At first, we stood back, watching from a distance. But gradually, almost without realizing it, we moved closer. Eventually stepping quietly inside and becoming part of the service. The Mass was conducted in German, a language we couldn’t fully understand. But that didn’t matter. The process was calm, reverent, and somehow very warm. Even without grasping every word, I thought it would be meaningful just being present in that place.

예상치 못한 이 경험은, 오로지 여행에서만 느낄 수 있는 소중한 행운인 것 같았다. 무엇보다, 이 장소에서 주는 은총을 함께 느낄 수 있어서 감사했다. 이말은 여행코드가 맞아야 한다 생각하기 때문이다. 누군가는 더 자겠다고 하거나, 다른 곳을 가겠다거나 할 수도 있으니 말이다. 우린 그런 것이 없이 자연스레 함께 하는 동선이 얼마나 소중한지 알고 있다. 미래의 우리에게 추억의 힘과 내공으로 서로에게 단단해지는 과정인 것을 이미 알기 때문이다. 오늘의 특별한 경험을 가능하게 해준 위치의 호텔을 예약한 올리버에게 새삼 고마움이 더해진다.

This unexpected experience felt like a precious kind of luck that can only happen while you’re traveling. More than anything, I was grateful that we could share the grace of this place together. I believe it’s important that we’re in sync when we travel—because someone could’ve easily chosen to sleep in or go somewhere else. But we know how valuable it is to move together naturally without needing to adjust to one another. We already understand that these shared moments are shaping us, making us stronger for the future—both as individuals and as a team, through the power of memories and everything we’ve been through. And on top of that, today’s memorable experience made me feel even more grateful to Oliver for choosing this hotel in such a perfect location.

미사를 마치고 밖으로 나오니, 한결 맑아진 마음과 새로워진 기분이 들었다. 그렇게 조용한 골목길을 걷다 보니, 성 피터 성당(Peterskirche)이 눈앞에 나타났다. 웅장하지만 담백하고 단대한 느낌의 슈테판 대성당과는 또 다른 분위기와 외관이었고, 우린 마치 약속이나 한 듯 아무 말 없이 조용히 성당 안으로 들어섰다. 외관도 인상 깊었지만, 내부는 더더욱 아름다웠다. 슈테판 대성당과는 전혀 다른 분위기를 지닌 공간에서 또 한 번 깊은 인상을 받았다. 빈의 구시가지 중심에서 두 성당만 둘러보았을 뿐인데, 이것만으로도 앞으로 우리가 오스트리아에서 마주하게 될 수많은 경험들의 좋은 예시가 되어준 듯 했다.

After the Mass, we stepped outside, our hearts feeling clearer, our minds refreshed. We continued walking through the quiet alleys, and soon, St. Peter’s Church (Peterskirche) came into view. With a different exterior and atmosphere from St. Stephen’s, it drew us in. Without a word, we instinctively entered. Its interior was beautiful and left a deep impression on us, distinct from what we’d seen at St. Stephen’s, yet equally powerful. Though we had only visited two places in the center of Vienna’s old town, we felt like a preview of the many meaningful experiences waiting for us in Austria.

유럽 여행에서 성당과 자연을 빼놓고 얘기 할 수 없다. 그 만큼 핵심 요소이다. 우리의 여행 시기는 완연한 초록의 여름도, 눈 덮인 겨울의 크리스마스도 아닌 그 사이였지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 이 여정은 우리만의 여행으로 충분히 특별했다. 이제 막 시작된 우리의 오스트리아 여행, 새벽 미사처럼, 앞으로의 날들 또한 뜻밖의 감동, 설레임, 그리고 기대감으로 가득하다.

In Europe, cathedrals and nature are essential highlights of any journey. Though we traveled in a season that was neither the lush green of summer nor the snowy charm of Christmas, this trip already felt special—something uniquely our own. Our journey through Austria has only just begun, and like this early morning Mass, the days ahead feel full of unexpected beauty, quitet excitement, and a sense of anticipation.
