I’ve been wanting to hit the road for a change with the scorching heat dragging on, I suddenly thought of Hokkaido as a place for a light getaway. It’s relatively close by and is often remembered for skiing and golf as a winter season place. Because of that, I usually donโt consider Japan during this season, but fortunately, Hokkaido tends to be cooler than the other islands. So, I decided to challenge my own preconception that “Japan isnโt a summer travel destination” and give it a try.

Gently woken by the warm morning sunlight, we began the day with a simple yet healthy breakfast and a leisurely tea time. Oliver also completed his morning routine like a champ. Though our daily lives are usually hectic, we make a conscious effort to slow down when we travel โ to give ourselves a little more mental space. Taking this kind of quiet time to ease into the day and build anticipation for whatโs ahead is, in many ways, an essential part of the travel experience itself. To pause. To breathe. To let go of urgency and lean into presence โ this is what we allow ourselves to feel, with a quiet sense of excitement for what the day might bring. I truly believe this is at the heart of the journey: learning to let the heart arrive before the feet do.

There was one thing we absolutely had to do today โ take in the deep blue of the lake, with our eyes and with our hearts. All we hoped for was to avoid the crowds and not struggle with parking. To make that wish come true, we chose a Monday morning drive to the Blue Pond (Aoiike) as our first activity of the day. And we couldnโt have timed it more perfectly. The parking was effortless, and the place was blissfully quiet. The Blue Pond lay before us, still and shining, and we each took a moment to take it in โ to fill our eyes with the calm, shimmering light of the water. As we looked into each otherโs eyes, now reflecting that same quiet light, we felt happiness without needing words. The delicate glow of the lake danced in Oliverโs eyes too, and as he met my gaze, it felt like the light sparkled even more. In that moment, it was as if countless stars from some distant galaxy had spilled into our eyes, and the Blue Pond itself transformed into an emerald-colored universe. Then, without even realizing it, a small, joyful laugh escaped my lips โ and just like that, we were brought gently back to the lakeside, still wrapped in the magic of it all.

At first glance, the photo looks like we used some fancy AI tool to erase all the people in the background โ but nope, itโs 100% real. This is that spot, the one where you usually have to wait forever just to snap a single person-free shot. But somehow, we pulled it off โ no editing, no tricks, just perfect timing and a bit of luck. And as if that wasnโt enough, we even got a side of peace and quiet. Honestly, it felt like we had unlocked some secret travel cheat code.

The road to the lake wasnโt exactly an easy drive. It twisted and turned, rising and falling with uneven bumps along the way. As we climbed higher, my ears started to pop โ that familiar pressure that comes with elevation. Oddly enough, that sensation reminded me of moments in life when we feel like weโre at the top โ caught up in our own sense of success โ and somehow, the voices around us fade into the background. But then, as we began our descent into flatter land, my ears gradually cleared, and I could hear everything more clearly again. That quiet relief, that subtle shift, made me wonder โ maybe itโs not just the change in altitude, but the change in pace. Maybe itโs because, for once, time feels like it truly belongs to us. That clarity, that freedom โ it feels like a gift only those on a slow, mindful journey can receive. Perhaps thatโs the magic of a road trip during travel: the open road softens the mind, and even in the middle of nowhere, thoughts find room to breathe.

Of course, driving in Japan โ where the driverโs seat is on the opposite side from what weโre used to โ didnโt exactly feel natural at first. In fact, it felt like a whole new kind of team-building activity for us. For a brief moment, the white dashed center lines (instead of the familiar yellow ones from back home) gave us a strange sense of driving on the wrong side of the road. Total confusion. But soon enough, we started picking up clues from the directional arrows painted on the streets and began to find our own sense of balance and comfort. Every time we approached a turn, we would call out together, loud and proud:
โTurn left, stay tight! Turn right, go wide!โ
Just like little kids shouting with all our might, โChicks go cheep cheep! Pigs go oink oink!โ we gave it our all โ full volume, full heart. Who knew traffic safety could be this fun and joyful? Honestly, it might be the most adorable road safety chant ever invented. With every silly shout, we werenโt just following the rules โ we were making them our own. And in that, we added a little more love and laughter to every moment on the road. Thereโs something truly lovable about us, isnโt there?
